They‘re most commonly found in the kitchen over the kitchen table or hanging over the breakfast bar. Island style pendants are very common for a kitchen. This is when more than one light will hang from a center piece in a symmetrical way.
In offices and living rooms, glare can be reduced through the use of pendant lighting. A glare on a computer screen or television screen can be highly annoying. Using appropriately placed fixtures can reduce this glare and create even lighting for more specified spaces. Since these are not easy to move around once it is installed, this consideration should be addressed prior to hanging the light.
There is however one drawback. Most of these lights are designed to push light directly on to the space you want lit. Generally, they are more spot light in nature. And while there are some pendants that disperse light over a wide area, if this is your goal you may need to look elsewhere. Or better still, use a different fixture to disperse light, and use a pendant to highlight certain areas of the room. In most cases, but certainly not all, pendant lights will not be your sole source of light in a room.
