Whatever type of light fitting you‘re thinking of purchasing, you should take time to think about the effect you‘re hoping to achieve, and this means taking into account the size of the space you are planning to illuminate as well as the rest of the dcor. It‘s common sense, after all, that if you’re lighting, say, a narrow hallway, you’ll need a smaller fitting than if you were lighting a large lounge or dining room. In fact, in the larger space you will need more than one pendant to prevent casting ugly shadows.
It is advisable to mount pendant lighting fixtures at least 24" to 30" above the area to be lit. When mini pendants are used, the ideal height would be 18˝ to 24˝ above the surface area to be lighted. When two or three pendants are used, an adjustable pendant bar can be used to fix them at different heights. This makes it possible to adjust heights from time to time, varying the overall lighting effect in the process.
The number one spot for pendant lights inside a home is the kitchen- over the kitchen table or breakfast bar, depending on the homeowners taste and preferences. Island style pendants are unbelievably popular for use in kitchens, especially if you plant to hang more than one light from a center piece, symmetrically.
