These aren’t the only type of shades available; think of a shape and the chances are somebody has designed a pendant light shade to match. You will find triangles, rectangles, globes, bowls, squares, and probably artful combinations of two or more of them. Then there’s frosted glass, painted glass, coloured glass, resin, metal, fabric... The permutations of shape and material are endless and some designers have used them to stunning effect.
Beauty factor: Pendant lighting fixtures as well as the pendants and shades are beautiful. Let’s accept it - with the number and variety of designs that are available today, ceiling lighting simply can not hope to match pendants.
There is however one drawback. Most of these lights are designed to push light directly on to the space you want lit. Generally, they are more spot light in nature. And while there are some pendants that disperse light over a wide area, if this is your goal you may need to look elsewhere. Or better still, use a different fixture to disperse light, and use a pendant to highlight certain areas of the room. In most cases, but certainly not all, pendant lights will not be your sole source of light in a room.
